At Shopify, they help emerging small businesses get off the ground and grow into successful companies. They do this by creating great technology and by making it accessible to people that previously wouldn’t be able to afford it.
It all started with one store. They couldn’t find the kind of easy-to-use ecommerce software they needed, so they built our own. After experiencing their store’s success, they realized that we could share this tool with others and help them sell their products online.
Shopify was founded in 2006 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake. The user-friendly platform garnered rave reviews right off the bat, drawing accolades from TechCrunch, The New York Times and Fast Company. Shopify has received $22 million in Series A and B funding from Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital, Felicis Ventures, and Georgian Partners.
Today, Shopify powers tens of thousands of online retailers including General Electric, Amnesty International, CrossFit, Tesla Motors, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Foo Fighters, GitHub, and more. Their platform allows users to easily and quickly create their own online store without all the technical work involved in developing their own website, or the huge expense of having someone else build it. Shopify lets merchants manage all aspects of their shops: uploading products, changing the design, accepting credit card orders, and viewing their incoming orders and completed transactions.
They built Shopify to take the hassle out of running an online store, so their merchants can focus on what they do best: building and selling their products.
